Year 6 News

This term, Year 6 are debating ‘War: What is it Good For?’ and have been looking particularly at World War 1.
In Literacy, we have been reading War Horse, and writing our own letters from the Western Front. In Maths, we have been acting as rations officers and using our understanding of fractions to ensure that all of the supplies are shared equally by the soldiers in the trenches.
We have also been researching the events which led to the outbreak of war in 1914, and discussing how we would feel and act when the enlistment posters went up around Wallsend.

We were lucky enough to welcome archaeologists from Durham University into school to teach us more about what life was like for infantry soldiers one hundred years ago. They brought in a range of objects which we were able to explore, including uniforms, boots, and even a Princess Mary tin, one of thousands which were sent to every serving soldier at Christmas time in 1914.
Over the next few weeks, we’re looking forward to learning more about the Christmas truce, as well as doing some cooking on rations. We can’t wait!
