Our plans and sequencing of lessons follow the NCETM mastery approach (Year 1 through Year 6) where the goal is to deepen understanding so that each lesson builds upon the last. Mathematical concepts and skills are broken up across the key stages.
Teachers are supported through the NCETM prioritisation materials. They follow a year group overview which is split into the different areas of mathematics. Teachers use the guidance to create their own lessons, focusing on their knowledge of their children and the next steps the children are ready to take. As the curriculum revisits certain topics throughout the year, this allows children to revisit learning and retrieve prior knowledge.
We began this curriculum in September 2021. The feedback from teachers has been positive as they are able to break down larger concepts into smaller steps. Children are accessing the mastery curriculum at their own level and are given opportunities to reason, problem solve and extend their fluency.
